Meditation and SRF Literature Reading

Tuesday evenings, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
(except second Tuesday of the month - Prayer Service)

"Right study of scriptures leads to emancipation. Theoretical study is helpful when it inspires a devotee to practice the holy teachings. Wisdom thoughts are faithful guides and protectors when they become one’s constant companions. Redemption does not come from what one knows intellectually, but from what one becomes as a result of that knowledge. There must be a rational connection between one’s learning and oneself, so that a truth becomes such an integral part of the being that it cannot be dislodged by contrary temptations or doubts. This is intuitional learning, or realization." ~Paramahansa Yogananda

The SRF Literature Study is dedicated to meditation on and study of the written works of Paramahansa Yogananda, including Autobiography of a Yogi, his commentary on Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat, Wine of the Mystic, his collected talks, and other works as decided by the group's attendees. All are welcome to attend at any time, and no prior exposure to the works is required.

The SRF Literature Study group meets weekly, except for the second Tuesday of the month (when the Prayer Service is held), in the house behind the chapel at 73 Wheatland Street. From the main chapel, walk around the left side, following the path to the house. The group begins each meeting with an hour of meditation and chanting creating an open and receptive state for the absorption of the reading. A member (or members of the group) then reads the three to four pages assigned for that week. Time is taken to digest the material through meditative reflection and review. Those attending may share a quote of a sentence or two of the reading which has special meaning to them. Time is taken to reflect upon the practical application of the reading to one’s own life.

We are now reading from Paramahansa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi. Those attending are encouraged to bring their copy, which you can purchase from from the SRF Online Catalog or another online bookstore.
